We are a friendly eight GP practice, working in a semi-rural environment with a well-contained practice area and patient population. The list size is 12,500. We are situated to the Northwest of Wigan adjacent to the M6.
We aim to:
- provide excellent, accessible and supportive primary care with a wide range of surgery based patient services
- have good contact with, and knowledge of, secondary services
- to be active on behalf of our patients in ensuring continuous improvement in local and district health services
The practice views learning and personal development as central to providing good medical care. Many of our GP partners are ex-trainees.
The practice team includes eight GP partners (4 male, 4 female), one advanced nurse practitioner (who triages requests for urgent appointments in the afternoon and sees ‘on the day’ patients in the morning) and five practice nurses, a practice manager (who is also a partner) and reception/secretarial support staff. We have direct access to district nurses, community midwifery, health visitors, chiropody, physiotherapy and psychology either on-site or in the adjacent H. A. clinic.
We offer experience in Child Health Promotion (weekly clinic), Family Planning (weekly clinic), antenatal and postnatal care (weekly clinic) and minor surgery (including cryotherapy). We are actively involved in providing a wide range of chronic disease management, although sometimes this is done flexibly rather than through formal clinics.
We have developed practice guidelines for several clinical areas, including areas of chronic disease management. Out of hours experience includes time covering the practice and working at the local OOH Care provider (Ashton Leigh Wigan OOH Service). There are 3 trainers within the practice. The other partners and staff members are involved during the Registrar year with providing teaching.
There are weekly tutorials that aim to prepare you for summative assessment and the MRCGP. Registrars undertake weekly videoing of surgeries.
The practice has a good record of Registrars gaining MRCGP. There is weekly release to the Wigan Day Release Scheme which runs for 25 days in the year (9.00am to 4.30pm).
